Former Australian cricket player Damien Martyn has shown an incredible recovery after emerging from an induced coma due to meningitis while hospitalized in Gold Coast.


According to Cricket Australia, the 54-year-old Martyn, who is a World Cup champion, is set to be transferred from the intensive care unit soon.


During the second day of the fifth Ashes Test on Monday, Fox Sports reported that “Martyn has regained consciousness and is now able to communicate with his family.”


Adam Gilchrist, a close friend and former teammate, shared a statement on Sunday, noting, “The last 48 hours have been astonishing. He can now converse and is responding positively to treatment.”


Gilchrist mentioned that Martyn is in high spirits and feels “overwhelmed by the outpouring of support” from the cricket community worldwide.
