D Gukesh Triumphs Over Magnus Carlsen in Norway Chess 2025

Gukesh's Historic Victory
Chennai: D Gukesh achieved a remarkable victory against Magnus Carlsen during the sixth round of the ongoing Norway Chess 2025 tournament. His grandfather, Shankar Rajesh, expressed immense pride in Gukesh's accomplishment, particularly noting Carlsen's frustrated reaction after the match, where he aggressively banged the table.
This victory marks Gukesh's first classical win against the former world champion, making him only the second Indian to defeat Carlsen in the tournament's history, following Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa.
In a statement after the match, Shankar Rajesh remarked, 'We are incredibly proud of him. He is making progress every day. His goal is to reach the number one spot. This is one of the proudest moments, defeating World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen.'
Regarding Carlsen's outburst, which involved him knocking pieces off the board in frustration, Shankar commented that such reactions are natural in competitive sports. He further added, 'One of Gukesh's significant achievements is that he has now beaten Magnus Carlsen. There is no pressure on him now; he will be relaxed and continue to practice.'
Vishnu Prasanna, Gukesh's former coach and India's 33rd grandmaster, shared his thoughts on the match, stating, 'I have been coaching for many years... Initially, things did not look promising for Gukesh, but under pressure, he outperformed Magnus. The match had many twists and turns, making it very exciting, and I am thrilled he won.'
