The arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia has transcended mere goals and media buzz. His presence has not only filled stadiums but also attracted international attention, significantly altering the perception of the Saudi Pro League. However, recent controversies have raised questions about his influence.

Last year, Ronaldo expressed his commitment to the Kingdom, stating, “I consider myself Saudi,” which highlighted his deepening relationship with the region. Since joining Al-Nassr, his impact has been substantial, with reports indicating a 20% increase in attendance at home games, a 15% rise for away matches, and even a 3% uptick in games he did not play.

Nevertheless, the focus has shifted due to allegations from Ivan Toney and his Al-Ahli teammates, who suggested that there might be favoritism in the title race, implying attempts to “gift the trophy” to Ronaldo.

The Saudi Pro League has categorically dismissed these accusations, asserting that the league functions under a well-defined and independent framework. An SPL representative stated, “The Saudi Pro League operates on a clear structure where each club functions independently under the same regulations.” They emphasized that clubs have their own management and make decisions regarding recruitment and spending within a financial framework aimed at ensuring sustainability and competitive balance.

While acknowledging Ronaldo's role in enhancing the league's visibility, officials clarified the extent of his influence. “Cristiano Ronaldo has been fully committed to Al-Nassr and has significantly contributed to the club’s ambitions. However, no player, regardless of their stature, can dictate decisions beyond their own club,” the spokesperson remarked.

Since leaving Manchester United during the 2021–22 season, Ronaldo has maintained his status as the highest-paid footballer globally, reportedly earning £177 million annually. The Saudi initiative, supported by the Public Investment Fund, has transformed the league into a hub for elite talent. Yet, as discussions about fairness and influence intensify, the delicate balance between star power and sporting integrity is being tested.
