Cristiano Ronaldo's Emotional Farewell to the World Cup

Dallas [US], July 7: After Portugal's departure from the FIFA World Cup in the round of 16, football legend Cristiano Ronaldo shared his disappointment about leaving the tournament for the final time without securing the coveted trophy. However, he emphasized that he would refrain from making any hasty decisions regarding his future with the national team.

Another World Cup, another moment of heartbreak. Bearing the immense expectations of his football-enthusiastic nation throughout his career, Cristiano's sixth and final World Cup concluded with tears as Portugal squandered their last opportunity in stoppage time, following Mikel Merino's decisive goal in the 91st minute.

In a post-match media interaction, Cristiano expressed, 'I feel sad to exit the World Cup in this manner. I gave everything I had. I did my utmost, and I leave with a clear conscience. Yes, this was my last World Cup, but now I will take time to reflect and spend time with my family. I will not make any impulsive decisions.'

He further stated, 'I don’t make choices in the heat of the moment.'

Looking back on his international journey with Portugal, he noted that prior to his arrival, the nation had not claimed any titles. Cristiano has since led the team to victory in the Euro 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles, regarding the Euro championship as equally important as the World Cup.

'I have secured three titles for Portugal; before Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal had not won a single title. The most significant achievement for the national team was in 2016, the European Championship, which I consider just as meaningful as a World Cup,' he remarked.

Following Portugal's exit, team manager Roberto Martinez also confirmed his departure, to which Cristiano expressed his fondness for working with him. 'I enjoyed collaborating with him,' he said. 'A remarkable manager and a wonderful person, his contributions to Portugal deserve recognition. I want to extend my gratitude and wish him all the best... It's always disheartening to be eliminated from a major tournament. It is the World Cup. The team was really finding its rhythm. We performed well, in my opinion. It could have gone either way, but that’s football. We must regroup and move forward,' he concluded.
