Cristiano Ronaldo Celebrates Portugal's 5-0 Victory and Focuses on Team Goals
Ronaldo Reflects on Portugal's Dominant Win
Houston [US], June 24: Following Portugal's impressive 5-0 victory against Uzbekistan in their second group-stage match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, captain Cristiano Ronaldo expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, emphasizing that the win was crucial for their goal of advancing from the group stage.
In his post-match comments, Ronaldo responded to inquiries about a potential showdown with his long-time rival, Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, describing the idea as 'fantastic.' However, he reiterated that his primary concern is ensuring Portugal progresses further in the tournament.
“I can’t say much about that. It would be fantastic, but the focus today was on winning and preparing for what lies ahead. Our main objective was to move past the group stage, and we accomplished that,” Ronaldo stated, as reported by ESPN.
The 41-year-old highlighted that securing qualification was their top priority and praised the team's convincing display.
Ronaldo also acknowledged the tough lead-up to the match, noting the intense scrutiny faced by both players and head coach Roberto Martinez. He remarked that criticism is a part of his extensive career, where public opinion fluctuates based on performance.
“It was a challenging week, with public sentiment being quite harsh on all of us, particularly on me and the coach,” Ronaldo shared.
“I’ve been in this profession for 23 years, and when things go well, it’s 'Cristiano is fantastic,' but when they don’t, it’s 'Cristiano is finished, he’s too old.' That’s just how it is. However, we responded well today,” he added.
When pressed about Messi, Ronaldo quickly deflected the question, stating, “Next question,” in response to inquiries regarding Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland, who are all contenders for the tournament's Golden Boot.
“The key is the team and our unity. We can’t control external opinions. We know that when we don’t win, the criticism, especially towards me, intensifies,” Ronaldo concluded.
