Yuvraj Singh Reflects on Coaching Abhishek Sharma's Rise in T20 Cricket
Yuvraj Singh's Journey from Player to Mentor
Yuvraj Singh, once a young cricketer grappling with insecurities while under the spotlight, has now embraced the role of a mentor. Two decades later, he finds joy in guiding Abhishek Sharma, who is making waves in T20 cricket with his impressive batting skills.
In a recent conversation, Yuvraj shared insights about his coaching journey, emphasizing that while Abhishek has been honing his skills for several years, his own role has evolved into one of sharing experiences and wisdom, especially as he neared retirement.
The former cricketer, now 44, believes that mentoring Abhishek has deepened his understanding of coaching, a perspective he lacked during his own formative years.
Yuvraj noted, "Working with Abhishek has taught me the essential qualities of a coach and how to nurture talent effectively. His hard work over the past few years is now evident in his performances."
During the pandemic, Abhishek and his close friend Shubman Gill spent time at Yuvraj's home in Chandigarh, where he provided guidance and support.
While Yuvraj acknowledges the strict discipline of his father, Yograj Singh, he insists that his coaching style is distinct. He believes in empathizing with players, understanding their mental challenges, and fostering a collaborative environment.
Reflecting on his own experiences as a young player, Yuvraj understands the pressures faced by today's youth in cricket. He emphasizes the importance of listening and adapting to their needs.
Since joining the Indian T20 team, Abhishek has transformed the batting approach, and Yuvraj credits the supportive environment created by coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav.
He recalls how Gary Kirsten's coaching philosophy encouraged him to play freely, a sentiment echoed by the current leadership, which has empowered Abhishek to express himself on the field.
