Yuvraj Singh Reflects on Captaincy Choices

Yuvraj Singh recently shared his feelings about not being appointed as India's captain in 2007 after Rahul Dravid stepped down. Instead, MS Dhoni was chosen to lead the team ahead of the inaugural T20 World Cup, while Anil Kumble took charge of the Test squad. This decision turned out to be a pivotal moment, as Dhoni went on to become the most successful captain in white-ball cricket, achieving the unique feat of winning all three major ICC trophies.

Despite Dhoni's success, Yuvraj admitted he felt let down by the decision, especially since he was serving as vice-captain at the time. He noted that Dhoni's rise to captaincy seemed unexpected, given that more seasoned players like Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh were in the squad. Yuvraj remarked, "When MS Dhoni was made captain, it felt like destiny was at play, but from a player's viewpoint, it was disappointing after years of hard work."

In a recent discussion with SportsTak, Yuvraj also expressed his disappointment regarding Abhishek Sharma not being appointed as the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), with Ishan Kishan taking the role instead. He highlighted that while he admires Kishan's contributions to Indian cricket, he felt Abhishek deserved the opportunity to lead, especially after his impressive performances leading up to the World Cup.

Yuvraj stated, "If Abhishek had been made captain after his achievements, it would have been a great learning experience for him. In franchise cricket, players need opportunities to grow. I believe the IPL is an excellent platform for this." He also expressed skepticism about SRH's chances in the tournament, citing concerns over their bowling strength. However, he remains supportive of the team and emphasized the importance of overcoming disappointment to strive for better performance.
