Yuvraj Singh Advocates for Golf Among Cricketers to Alleviate Stress
Yuvraj Singh's Insights on Golf for Cricketers
Former India all-rounder and World Cup champion Yuvraj Singh emphasized the importance of cricketers embracing golf early in their careers to manage the pressures associated with their sport. Speaking on Thursday, Yuvraj, who has developed a passion for golf post-retirement, was announced as the brand ambassador for the upcoming Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL).
During the launch of the 10 franchises for the IGPL, Yuvraj remarked, “Cricketers should incorporate golf into their routine. I wish I had started playing golf sooner, as it could have positively impacted my cricketing career. Golf is a fantastic way to relax and relieve stress.”
He noted that many international cricketers, including Australians, Kiwis, English, and South Africans, have been playing golf since childhood. Yuvraj acknowledged that while golf is often viewed as an elite sport, it is accessible to everyone through public courses.
“We perceive golf as a sport for the privileged, but we aim to encourage every child in India to experience it. We are working to introduce golf in schools, as I believe every child should explore various sports,” he added.
Yuvraj highlighted the excitement surrounding the IGPL, stating, “This league will generate buzz around golf, inspiring more children to engage with the sport, watch it on television, and ultimately participate. It will also create financial opportunities within the sport, ensuring a brighter future for young athletes, which is our duty.” This year’s IGPL will feature 10 franchises and 15 events, including five international tournaments in locations such as Mauritius, Congo, South Africa, and two in Morocco.
Additionally, the IGPL has formed a strategic partnership with LIV Golf, integrating the league with the professional tour. The event was also graced by tennis legend Leander Paes, co-owner of the Kolkata franchise, and IGPL CEO Uttam Singh Mundy.
