Young Talents Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer Join CSK with Record Deals
A New Era for Chennai Super Kings
Mahendra Singh Dhoni had already made his mark as a cricketing icon long before Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma entered the world. While they were still in their infancy, Dhoni was establishing his legacy as 'Captain Cool' during the early days of the IPL.
However, neither 19-year-old keeper-batter Kartik nor 20-year-old all-rounder Veer could have imagined that by Tuesday evening, they would secure a remarkable joint deal worth Rs 14.20 crore with Chennai Super Kings.
What makes this opportunity even more thrilling is the chance to share the locker room with Dhoni, who, at 44, continues to impress on the field.
The question remains whether Kartik will get a chance to play alongside Dhoni and Sanju Samson or if Veer will be groomed as a potential successor to Ravindra Jadeja. Nonetheless, CSK seems to be shifting its focus towards the future, with Ruturaj Gaikwad taking on a more prominent role.
Historically, CSK has favored seasoned players, both domestic and international, and has rarely invested heavily in untested local talent, except for a notable instance when they spent nearly Rs 10 crore on Karnataka off-spinner Krishnappa Gowtham, who was later released.
However, with the new leadership of Gaikwad, the management appears to be placing greater trust in his insights.
Investing over USD 3 million (approximately Rs 28.40 crore) and nearly 60% of their budget on relatively inexperienced players signifies a notable shift in strategy.
The Influence of Data Science
Those familiar with the IPL landscape know that AR Srikkanth, who spent over 15 years with Kolkata Knight Riders, played a crucial role in scouting both local and international talent.
Now serving as CSK’s head of talent and player acquisitions, Srikkanth is recognized as one of the top cricket scouts globally. His decision to select Veer and Kartik, who collectively have 21 matches of senior-level T20 experience in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, indicates he has seen potential in them during the domestic season.
This strategy may or may not yield results, but it clearly shows CSK's commitment to building a future-ready team.
In the past, the focus was primarily on established internationals who had Dhoni's endorsement, but under Gaikwad's leadership and the influence of analytics, a transformation is evident.
Veer, a left-arm spinner and capable left-handed batter, will require time to develop, but the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association's efforts to have him participate in various matches across the country highlight his value.
At CSK, with Dhoni's mentorship and competition from West Indies’ Akeal Hossain, Veer is poised to enhance his skills.
Learning from the Best
Expressing his excitement about joining CSK, Veer stated, 'I’m thrilled to be part of Chennai Super Kings because MS Dhoni is there. His approach to batting in the lower order, his mindset, and his focus are all things I can learn from.'
'Even if I can absorb just four or five percent of his knowledge, it will be invaluable for my growth,' he added.
Kartik, known for his explosive batting with a strike rate exceeding 160, faces uncertainty regarding his place in the lineup, especially with Dhoni and Samson still active.
Nonetheless, he has already demonstrated his potential for the future, as evidenced by JSW's acquisition of him despite his limited senior-level experience.
Training at the academy run by pacer Deepak Chahar's father, Lokendra, Kartik has been honing his skills since he was five years old.
'His father brought him to my camp when he was just a child. My son Deepak suggested he take up wicketkeeping to become an all-rounder. He practices tirelessly, hitting 100 sixes a day,' Lokendra shared.
'While some may think I only produce my son and nephew Rahul Chahar, Kartik's record deal proves I have an eye for talent,' he added.
Only time will reveal if Veer and Kartik can live up to their expectations, but for now, they have every reason to celebrate their achievements.
