Kiaan Contractor: A Rising Star in Pickleball

At just 16 years old, Kiaan Contractor has already amassed an impressive collection of trophies that would make many seasoned athletes envious. Hailing from Ahmedabad, a hub for pickleball in India, Kiaan is a three-time gold medalist at the IPA Nationals and a medalist at the Pickleball World Cup. With the upcoming Pickleball World Cup set to take place in Vietnam from August 30 to September 6, he is eager to secure a spot on the Indian team, aiming to enhance his profile for a potential contract in the Indian Pickleball League (IPBL) and a place on the Pro Tour.

Experience from the PPA Tour

Kiaan's most significant achievement outside India occurred in April when he won the U18 Boys' Singles title at the PPA Sacramento Open in California, defeating Tennessee Potter with scores of 11-7, 11-8. This victory was particularly challenging as it was his first tournament in the US, where he had to adapt to new conditions. "I went to the USA for exposure, not just to win medals," Kiaan shared. "I entered with an open mind, having trained with top coaches, but I knew I was up against more experienced players."

Adapting to the different playing conditions proved to be a significant hurdle for Kiaan. He noted, "The balls and courts were drastically different. In the US, they use LifeTime balls, which bounce higher and are faster compared to the Franklin balls we use in India." He also mentioned the sharp sun in the US, which, despite lower temperatures, made playing conditions more challenging.

Initially, Kiaan struggled, losing the first game 8-11 against Xander Trinh and falling behind 3-7 in the second. He took a timeout to reflect on his hard work and the support from his coach, Dhiren Patel, and the Indian Pickleball Association. "Everything was new, and I was having difficulty adjusting to the ball," he recalled. However, as he became more familiar with the conditions, he adapted his strategy and began to win matches.

Despite the challenges, Kiaan found the atmosphere at the Sacramento Open invigorating. "The environment was fresh, and the crowd's passion was palpable," he noted. He compared the enthusiasm of US pickleball fans to the fervor Indian cricket fans have for their sport, highlighting the difference in spectator culture.

Preparing for the Pickleball World Cup

At the last Pickleball World Cup in Fort Lauderdale, Kiaan secured three bronze medals in the Under-16 singles, doubles with partner Aarav Raj Khanna, and the team event. He later achieved a golden hat-trick at the IPA Nationals in Bengaluru, winning titles in U16 singles, doubles, and team events. Now, he is focused on qualifying for the upcoming World Cup in Da Nang, Vietnam, where conditions are expected to be hot and humid, potentially giving Indian players an advantage.

As the junior category becomes increasingly competitive in India, Kiaan is also preparing to compete in the senior category at the upcoming trials. He aims to refine his game, focusing on a more strategic approach rather than the fast-paced style he used in the Under-16 level.

Looking Ahead

The upcoming Pickleball World Cup is a pivotal moment for Kiaan as he transitions to the senior circuit. With the support of his mother, Ritu Contractor, a nutritionist and fitness trainer, he is determined to enhance his skills and secure a place in the IPBL. "In the next few years, I aim to win in open categories before I turn 18 or 19, and then I hope to get drafted into the IPBL, which could lead to a PPA or APP contract," he concluded.
