Yograj Singh Shares Yuvraj's Thoughts on Shubman Gill's Stellar Test Performance

Yograj Singh Discusses Yuvraj's Reaction to Gill's Performance

In New Delhi, former cricketer Yograj Singh opened up about his son Yuvraj's response to Shubman Gill's outstanding batting display, which led India to a historic Test victory at Edgbaston.

Gill's remarkable performance left the English team struggling throughout the five-day match in the second Test of the five-match series. The Indian batsmen dominated the game, finally breaking their long-standing winless streak at Edgbaston. The Indian Test captain captivated fans with his elegant strokeplay and ability to score runs consistently in both innings.

Yograj mentioned that he reached out to Yuvraj, who mentors Gill, after India's impressive 336-run win to congratulate him on the young player's success. He noted that Yuvraj praised Gill for his dedication and hard work in refining his skills, emphasizing that he merely provided support.

“I called him yesterday to congratulate him. He responded, ‘No, he has also worked hard.’ If it were another coach, they might have taken credit, but he didn’t. He acknowledged that Shubman has put in the effort. I am just the support system,” Yograj shared.

Gill took charge of boosting India's score, particularly after the team faced two batting collapses in Leeds. He played a captain's innings, smashing a remarkable 269 runs off 387 balls. In his second innings, when an aggressive approach was essential, Gill dazzled England's inexperienced pace attack with a quickfire 161 runs off just 162 balls, maintaining a strike rate close to 100.

After leveling the series at 1-1, Gill highlighted the adjustments he made to his technique during a press conference, stating, “I started working on some aspects when the IPL was concluding. The perception of technique evolves after every series and match. As a team or player, we don’t focus too much on external opinions.”

With a total of 430 runs across both innings, Gill now holds the second-highest run aggregate in a single Test, trailing only England's Graham Gooch, who scored 456 runs against India at Lord's in 1990.

“It varies with each match. However, what matters most is how your team perceives you and the confidence your teammates have in you, rather than external opinions about my technique,” he added.

With the series tied at 1-1 after the first two Tests, India and England are set to clash again in the third Test, which begins on Thursday.
