Yamini Mourya's Silver Medal Journey

Glasgow [Scotland], August 1: Indian judoka Yamini Mourya expressed her disappointment after earning a silver medal in the women's -57kg judo event, believing she had the potential to clinch gold.

Mourya maintained an aggressive approach throughout the match but ultimately lost due to a penalty point incurred from negative play.

She dedicated her medal to her family and country for their steadfast support and pledged to strive for gold at the upcoming Asian Games.

In a tightly contested final at the Commonwealth Games 2026, Mourya faced England's Acelya Toprak, resulting in a hard-fought defeat.

"I feel a bit let down. I truly believed I could win gold. I was aggressive until the very end and thought I could score. Unfortunately, I lost due to a penalty point for negative play... This medal is primarily for my country and my family... Their support has been invaluable... I'm preparing for the Asian Games and will give my all to secure a medal there as well," Mourya stated.

Yamini engaged in a nearly seven-minute battle before succumbing via Ippon after receiving a third Shido penalty during the Golden Score period, which awarded Toprak the gold medal while Yamini earned a commendable silver for India.

Despite narrowly missing gold, Yamini's silver contributes to India's remarkable judo performance at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

Earlier, Asmita Dey secured gold in the women's -48kg category, and Harsh Singh won the men's -60kg title, marking a historic double gold achievement for Indian judo.

India has now amassed a total of 20 medals in Glasgow, including five gold, ten silver, and five bronze.
