Xabi Alonso Takes the Helm at Chelsea
On August 10, in London, Chelsea's newly appointed manager, Xabi Alonso, expressed his enthusiasm for taking charge of the Premier League team, calling his appointment a timely and fitting opportunity.
During an interview on JioHotstar, Alonso shared his attraction to clubs with a rich legacy and a winning ethos, asserting that Chelsea offers an ideal foundation to create something remarkable.
"I have always been captivated by clubs that boast a strong history and a winning culture, and Chelsea undoubtedly fits that description. This is a significant honor for me and a tremendous opportunity. The timing feels right for both the club and myself, and I believe we can build something exceptional together," Alonso remarked.
Recognizing the high expectations tied to his new role, the former manager of Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen stated he is prepared to tackle the challenges ahead and is committed to giving his all for the club.
"I am fully aware of the expectations and the challenges that lie ahead, but I am ready to embrace them. I am eager to get started and to contribute my best to this club," he added.
Alonso also highlighted the potential within Chelsea's roster, noting that while the team possesses the quality to compete at the highest levels, continuous improvement is essential.
"Chelsea has a rich history and has achieved remarkable success over the past couple of decades. The squad is talented and has significant potential. Naturally, there are areas where we need to enhance," he stated.
The new manager articulated his vision for Chelsea, aiming to cultivate a team that plays with intensity, controls matches, and showcases attractive football.
"We are embarking on a new project, and our goal is to develop a team that plays with intensity, manages games effectively, and competes at the highest level. We must be strategic, work diligently, and create a team that brings energy to the pitch and plays appealing football, whether at home or away," Alonso explained.
In May, Chelsea confirmed the hiring of Xabi Alonso, a former star with Liverpool and Real Madrid, as their new manager. He has signed a four-year contract.
The club announced, "Chelsea Football Club is thrilled to declare the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the Manager of the men's team. The Spaniard will commence his role on July 1, 2026, having agreed to a four-year deal at Stamford Bridge."
As a player, Xabi has secured two UEFA Champions League titles, one with Liverpool and another with Real Madrid, along with the FA Cup, La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Bundesliga titles (with Bayern Munich). In his coaching debut, he led Bayer Leverkusen to an unbeaten Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season.
