Anticipation Surrounds Dhoni's Future in IPL

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 approaches, speculation is rife about whether this will be MS Dhoni's last season as a player, similar to previous tournaments. Since his retirement from international cricket in 2020, fans have been eager to know when the legendary cricketer will conclude his IPL journey. With Sanju Samson now part of the five-time champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK), many believe that Dhoni's retirement is imminent. It remains uncertain whether he will retire after the IPL 2026 season or fulfill his contract until 2027.

Given Samson's skills as a wicketkeeper, there are theories suggesting that Dhoni might continue to play as an impact player. However, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra strongly opposes this notion. He argues that if Dhoni is only playing as an impact player, it might be time for him to retire, emphasizing that Dhoni's true strength lies in his on-field presence and game-reading abilities. Chopra stated, “You don’t run the team from the dugout; in cricket, being on the field is crucial. Dhoni’s insight is unparalleled, and that’s what sets him apart.”

Chopra also noted that with Sanju Samson poised to take over the wicketkeeping duties, it could happen sooner rather than later, depending on Dhoni's fitness and knee condition. He remarked, “If he is playing as an Impact Player, I think it’s time for him to hang up his boots.” Last season, Dhoni batted as low as No. 8 in several matches due to his knee issues, and when Ruturaj Gaikwad was injured, Dhoni stepped in as captain but could not turn the team's fortunes around, leading to their last-place finish for the first time in 18 years.

CSK is set to kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against the Rajasthan Royals on March 30 at Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati.
