West Indies Secure Victory in T20 World Cup

Bristol [UK], June 21: The West Indies continued their impressive performance in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, achieving a hard-fought five-wicket victory against Sri Lanka in a low-scoring match held in Bristol on Sunday.

Hayley Matthews was once again the standout performer with the ball, achieving her second consecutive three-wicket haul, which helped limit Sri Lanka to a mere 99 runs. In response, the West Indies batting lineup faced challenges but successfully chased down the target, concluding their innings at 99 for 5 in just 16.1 overs.

This win marks the West Indies' third straight victory in the tournament, solidifying their chances for a semi-final berth. They currently occupy the second position in Group B, tied on points with England but trailing in net run rate.

Choosing to bowl first, Matthews led her team’s bowling attack, claiming three wickets within her first two overs, as noted on the ICC website.

She dismissed Vishmi Gunarathne in the opening over and followed up with crucial wickets of Chamari Athapaththu and Harshitha Samarawickrama in the subsequent over. With Chinelle Henry contributing by taking the wicket of Imesha Dulani, Sri Lanka found themselves struggling at 23/4 by the end of the powerplay.

Nilakshika Silva, who had previously guided Sri Lanka to a win against the defending champions New Zealand, attempted to stabilize the innings again. She formed a 34-run partnership with Kavisha Dilhari, ultimately scoring 30 runs off 26 balls.

As the innings progressed, Kawya Kavindi (17) was the only other Sri Lankan batter to show some resistance as the rest of the batting lineup faltered.

The West Indies bowlers delivered a disciplined performance, ensuring Sri Lanka never gained momentum in the match. Matthews concluded her spell with impressive figures of 3/15 in four overs, while Karishma Ramharack took 2/15, contributing to a day where all West Indian bowlers claimed wickets.

In pursuit of a modest target, the West Indies faced some difficulties.

After a promising 28-run opening partnership, the West Indies lost Matthews to a run-out while attempting a risky single, with Silva executing a direct hit from mid-on.

Deandra Dottin fell victim to Nimasha Meepage on the last ball of the powerplay, leaving the West Indies at 36/2.

The Sri Lankan bowlers maintained pressure on the West Indies, taking wickets at regular intervals. Kavisha Dilhari proved particularly challenging, finishing with figures of 2/22, giving Sri Lanka a glimmer of hope.

However, Stafanie Taylor managed to keep the pressure under control, remaining unbeaten with 27 runs. Her partnership of 29 runs with Jannillea Glasgow allowed the West Indies to secure the necessary runs with nearly four overs to spare.
