Safe Return of West Indies Players

The players and support staff of the West Indies have successfully returned to their homeland after facing travel challenges in India following the T20 World Cup, as confirmed by Cricket West Indies (CWI).

Travel plans were severely affected by the ongoing conflict in West Asia, particularly between the US-Israel and Iran, which resulted in the West Indies and South African teams being stranded in Kolkata due to the closure of airspace and major airports, including those in Dubai.

The West Indies concluded their T20 World Cup matches in Kolkata on March 1.

On Thursday, the ICC announced that the last group of players had departed.

In a statement released on Saturday, CWI confirmed that all players and members of the Team Management Unit (TMU) associated with the West Indies squad during the tournament have successfully reached their destinations.

CWI stated, “The final group of players and support staff completed their journeys over the past several days and have now safely arrived at their respective destinations.”

While nine players had already departed earlier in the week, the remaining 16 were scheduled to fly on commercial flights.

CWI expressed gratitude to the ICC, regional cricket boards, and other stakeholders for their assistance in coordinating the return of the players and staff.

“We also extend our thanks to West Indies fans and the broader cricket community for their concern and well-wishes,” they added.

“The safety and well-being of our players and staff are our top priorities, and we are thankful that this situation has been resolved safely and satisfactorily.”

The travel disruptions had led to some criticism from players, with West Indies head coach Daren Sammy voicing his frustration over the lack of communication from the ICC after a charter flight from Kolkata was canceled due to logistical challenges.
