West Indies Stuns India with Record Chase in Thrilling T20I Match
West Indies Achieves Historic Victory
In a remarkable display of skill and determination, West Indies captain Shai Hope scored an impressive unbeaten 102, leading his team to a stunning six-wicket victory over India in the second T20I match on Friday. This win not only leveled the five-match series at 1-1 but also marked the highest T20I chase against India, ranking as the second highest overall in T20 history.
Facing a daunting target of 250 runs, the West Indies relied heavily on Hope's explosive performance, which included 6 fours and 9 sixes off just 45 balls. He received significant support from Sherfane Rutherford, who contributed 84 runs off 37 balls, and Romario Shepherd, who added 34 runs off 13 balls, as the team successfully chased down the target in just 18.3 overs.
For India, Sanju Samson made a strong comeback with a rapid 82 runs, while Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma's quick contributions helped the team reach a total of 249/5.
The West Indies' chase began on a shaky note, with Mayank Yadav taking two wickets in consecutive deliveries, dismissing Kamil Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer. However, Hope and Rutherford quickly turned the tide, attacking India's spin bowlers who struggled with the wet conditions.
Hope, who had already showcased his form with back-to-back centuries in the previous ODI series, reached his half-century in just 24 balls. He capped off the chase by hitting Axar Patel for a six, marking his second T20I century.
Rutherford matched Hope's intensity, also scoring a fifty in 24 balls, as the duo formed a formidable partnership, adding 120 runs in just 54 balls. Rutherford was fortunate to survive a dropped catch at 38 runs, which allowed them to build a strong 100-run partnership in just 43 balls.
Shepherd's late innings flourish helped the West Indies secure the win, scoring 41 runs in the final two overs.
Earlier in the match, after a series of low scores, Samson ignited the Indian innings with a blistering 21-ball fifty, marking his ninth in T20Is. He and Ishan Kishan formed a solid 97-run partnership, propelling India to their highest T20I total against the West Indies.
The pair set a rapid pace, reaching 139/1 in just 11 overs, with Kishan contributing a quick 43 runs off 22 balls. However, Roston Chase's return to the attack proved pivotal, as he took two wickets in consecutive overs, breaking the partnership.
Despite losing three wickets for just 23 runs in the middle overs, Shreyas Iyer, fresh off his maiden T20I century, countered with a quick 40 runs off 18 balls, while Tilak Varma remained unbeaten on 44 runs off 18 balls, maintaining pressure on the West Indies.
India's innings was characterized by aggressive batting, with Abhishek Sharma also contributing early runs. The pitch offered little assistance to bowlers, allowing the Indian batsmen to dominate.
Samson's innings was marked by a few lucky escapes, including a dropped catch early on, but he capitalized on his chances, dismantling the West Indies bowling attack with a flurry of boundaries.
