West Indies Sets Record with Massive 254 in T20 World Cup Clash Against Zimbabwe
West Indies Achieves Historic T20 World Cup Milestone
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], February 23: In a thrilling Super 8 match at the Wankhede Stadium, the West Indies achieved the second-highest team total in T20 World Cup history, scoring an impressive 254 runs for 6 wickets against Zimbabwe during the 2026 tournament.
This remarkable score ranks just behind Sri Lanka's record of 260 for 6 against Kenya in the 2007 T20 World Cup. Notably, this marks only the second instance of a team surpassing the 250-run threshold in T20 World Cup history.
Additionally, this total stands as the highest ever recorded by any team against Zimbabwe, surpassing India's previous record of 234 for 2 in Harare in 2024. The West Indies also equaled the record for the most sixes in a T20 World Cup innings, hitting 19 sixes, matching the Netherlands' feat against Ireland in the 2014 edition.
This innings marked the third occasion the West Indies has scored over 250 runs in T20 internationals, tying them with Zimbabwe for the second-most such totals.
After being invited to bat first, the West Indies faced an early setback, losing opener Brandon King for just nine runs in the third over, courtesy of Richard Ngarava's bowling.
By the end of the fourth over, the West Indies had managed to score 29 runs for the loss of one wicket. Captain Shai Hope was dismissed for 14 runs off 12 balls by Brad Evans during the sixth over, leaving the team at 55 for 2 at the end of the power play.
Shimron Hetmyer then took charge, smashing two consecutive sixes off Graeme Cremer in the seventh over. He followed this up with a stunning 20 runs in the next over bowled by Sikandar Raza, reaching his half-century in just 19 balls—the fastest fifty for the West Indies in T20 World Cup history.
Hetmyer's previous record was a 22-ball fifty against Scotland earlier in the tournament. After 10 overs, the West Indies stood strong at 115 for 2. In the 13th over, Hetmyer and Rovman Powell combined to score 19 runs off Dion Myers, pushing the score to 150 for 2.
Powell reached his half-century in 29 balls at the start of the 15th over. However, Graeme Cremer struck back, dismissing Hetmyer and breaking their 122-run partnership. Hetmyer left the field after an explosive innings of 85 runs off just 34 balls, featuring seven fours and as many sixes.
Speedster Blessing Muzarabani then took down Powell, who scored 59 runs off 35 balls, including eight boundaries, in the 17th over. Romario Shepherd followed shortly after, scoring 21 runs off 10 balls, which included three sixes, before departing in the 19th over.
In the final moments, Jason Holder contributed 13 runs off four balls, hitting two sixes, while Sherfane Rutherford's explosive unbeaten 31 runs off just 13 balls, with three fours and two towering sixes, propelled the West Indies to their monumental total of 254 for 6 in 20 overs.
