West Indies Prepare for Crucial ODI Matches

St John’s [Antigua], May 6: The West Indies have unveiled a formidable 15-member squad for their forthcoming ODI series against Ireland and England. The Caribbean team is set to embark on their European tour later this month, where they will compete in six ODI matches, which are pivotal for their journey towards the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup scheduled for 2027.

Shai Hope, known for his aggressive batting style, has been appointed as captain once again. He will lead a strong lineup featuring top-order batsmen such as Brandon King, Evin Lewis, and Keacy Carty, alongside promising young talent Jewel Andrew. Andrew made a significant impact during the last ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, scoring 207 runs in four matches with an impressive average of 69.00 and a strike rate nearing 110, including a century and a half-century.

The squad mirrors the team that achieved a remarkable 3-0 series victory over Bangladesh in their last ODI series at the end of the previous year. However, left-handed batsman Shimron Hetmyer will be absent as he is currently participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Rajasthan Royals.

West Indies coach Daren Sammy expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming tour, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the momentum gained from their recent series wins against England and Bangladesh as they prepare for the next 50-over World Cup, which will take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in 2027.

“These matches are crucial for our preparations for the 2027 World Cup, and we are seeing signs of the team developing consistency following our success against Bangladesh and England last year,” Sammy stated, as reported by the ICC.

“We anticipate challenging conditions, but we are fostering a culture and mindset that focuses on playing the style of cricket that aligns with our long-term goals,” he added.

Additionally, the West Indies have made some adjustments to their coaching staff. Former fast bowler and 2012 T20 World Cup champion Ravi Rampaul will take over as bowling coach, succeeding New Zealander James Franklin. Meanwhile, Ireland cricket legend Kevin O’Brien will lend his expertise during the three matches against his former team.
