Wasim Jaffer Reflects on Early Encounter with Hardik Pandya
A Memorable Meeting
In Mumbai, former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer shared his memories of first meeting Hardik Pandya, the celebrated all-rounder, nearly 12 years ago. Jaffer highlighted how Pandya admired his batting technique during their initial encounter.
Before making his debut for Team India in 2016, Hardik underwent rigorous training in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL). He made his mark in various formats, debuting in first-class, List-A, and T20 cricket during the 2013-14 season, and joined the IPL in 2015. In his inaugural IPL season with the Mumbai Indians, he amassed 112 runs in eight innings, showcasing his explosive batting and bowling skills.
In an Instagram video, Jaffer reminisced about their first meeting, which took place during the Ranji Trophy season of 2014 or 2015. Notably, Pandya recently acknowledged Jaffer as his inspiration at the BCCI Awards in Delhi.
Jaffer recounted that he met Hardik at cricketer Irfan Pathan's home during a dinner gathering. He expressed his delight that Hardik chose to look up to someone who built his reputation primarily through domestic cricket.
He recalled, 'The first time I met him was during the 2014 or 2015 Ranji season when Mumbai faced Baroda. I was injured and not playing, but I traveled with the team. It was my last season with Mumbai before moving to Vidarbha. At Irfan's house for dinner, I met Hardik and his brother Krunal for the first time.'
'Irfan introduced him to me, saying, 'Meet Hardik, he will play very soon.' I believe he was signed by the Mumbai Indians that same season. Hardik mentioned he was a fan of mine, saying, 'I watch your batting a lot and really like your style.'
'It’s heartwarming that he still mentions me as an inspiration in front of such prominent players. This is why people are curious about who Wasim Jaffer is. While many names are often mentioned, mine might not be as memorable since I made my mark in First-Class cricket,' he concluded.
From 2000 to 2008, Jaffer represented India in 31 Test matches, accumulating 1,944 runs at an average of 34.10, including five centuries and 11 fifties, with a top score of 211. His remarkable first-class record, with 19,410 runs in 260 matches at an average of 50.67, solidified his legendary status, featuring 57 centuries and 91 fifties, with a personal best of 314*.
Recently, Hardik played a pivotal role in India's T20 World Cup 2026 victory, scoring 217 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 160.74, along with nine wickets at an average of 32.33. With two T20 World Cups and one ICC Champions Trophy to his credit, Hardik has established himself as one of the premier all-rounders in limited-overs cricket, particularly excelling in high-stakes matches.
