Aichi-Nagoya, Japan - On September 23, former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman extended his congratulations to the Indian women's cricket team for clinching the gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026, marking a significant achievement for Indian cricket.
Currently, Laxman is accompanying the Indian men's cricket team as the interim head coach for their event at the Asian Games.
Under his leadership, the Indian men's team recently triumphed over Japan in a nail-biting one-off T20I, winning by just two runs. The men's cricket tournament is scheduled to take place from September 24 to October 3.
Laxman took to the social media platform X to commend the women's team and their support staff for their remarkable efforts following their title victory.
He expressed, "Congratulations to our women’s team on winning the gold. A fantastic achievement and a proud moment for Indian cricket. Well done to the entire team and support staff."
In a repeat of their gold-medal match from Hangzhou 2023, India triumphed over Sri Lanka by 147 runs, successfully defending their title in women's cricket at the Asian Games. This victory also marked India's first gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games.
Sri Lanka secured the silver medal for the second consecutive time, while Pakistan took home the bronze after defeating Bangladesh in the third-place playoff earlier in the day. Deepti Sharma was a standout performer, achieving remarkable bowling figures of 3/6.
Contributions from Shafali Verma, Shree Charani, and Shreyanka Patil, who each took two wickets, further solidified India's dominant bowling performance.
