Virat Kohli's Resurgence: Ashwin Analyzes Aggressive Celebrations and Domestic Commitment
Kohli's Dynamic Comeback
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], November 4: Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin shared insights on Virat Kohli's spirited celebrations following his consecutive centuries against South Africa. He noted that Kohli's recent performances might be influenced by discussions regarding his future as a one-format player, motivating him to demonstrate his capabilities.
After experiencing two consecutive ducks in Australia upon his return to international cricket in November, Kohli has shown remarkable form. He scored an impressive 74* in Sydney during a dead rubber and followed it up with two centuries against South Africa in the ongoing ODI series. His innings have been characterized by exceptional control and intent against both spin and pace, along with impressive running between the wickets. Kohli's animated celebrations, which had previously diminished, have made a notable return.
On his YouTube channel, 'Ash Ki Baat', Ashwin questioned, "What drives Kohli's celebrations? What challenges has he faced? It's important to remember that he stepped away from Test cricket, a format he cherished. His decision was not solely based on personal needs; it was significant and complex."
Ashwin, a close teammate of Kohli, believes that there has been ongoing communication between Kohli and the team management since he agreed to participate in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, starting December 24. He suggested that Kohli has internalized the discussions surrounding his ODI future, allowing him to express himself fully, both in his celebrations and his commitment to domestic cricket.
"With his agreement to play in the Vijay Hazare, it indicates that dialogue is taking place. Kohli might be reflecting on whether others doubt his abilities. His competitive nature has driven his success over the years. He may have taken to heart the skepticism regarding his skills, motivating him to prove himself. In the past, this desire to validate oneself can lead to setbacks, but now he seems determined to showcase his talent. He appears to be in a good mental space, with improved balance crucial for timing and shot selection," Ashwin concluded.
In 12 ODIs this year, Kohli has amassed 586 runs in 12 innings, averaging 58.60 with a strike rate of 92.72, including three centuries and three fifties, with a top score of 135. In the current series against South Africa, he is on track to potentially earn the 'Player of the Series' title, having scored 237 runs at an average of 118.50 and a strike rate exceeding 111, featuring two centuries.
India is set to face South Africa in the series decider at Visakhapatnam on Saturday, following the Proteas' successful chase of 359 runs in Raipur, led by a stellar century from Aiden Markram. Kohli boasts an impressive record at Visakhapatnam, having scored 587 runs in seven innings at an average of 97.83, including three centuries and two fifties, with a highest score of 157*.
