Virat Kohli Reflects on ODI Success and Future Plans After Century Against South Africa
Kohli's Insights Post-Match
In Ranchi, Jharkhand, following a remarkable victory and his match-winning century against South Africa in the first ODI, Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli shared his thoughts on his game preparation. He emphasized that he does not rely heavily on extensive preparation, asserting that his approach to cricket is primarily mental.
Kohli also made it clear that he intends to focus solely on one format of the game moving forward.
Continuing to captivate his fans amid discussions regarding his ODI career leading up to the 2027 World Cup, Kohli celebrated his 52nd ODI century, setting a new record for the most centuries in a single format. During his innings, he scored 135 runs off 120 balls, including 11 fours and seven sixes, marking one of his most enjoyable centuries in recent times.
During the post-match presentation, Kohli expressed his desire to maintain a mindset of enjoyment while playing. Despite media speculation about a potential return to Test cricket after India's recent 0-2 series loss to South Africa at home, Kohli reiterated his commitment to playing just one format.
Reflecting on his performance, he noted, "Today was really nice to get into the game like that. The pitch played well for the first 20-25 overs before slowing down. It was about staying in a space of enjoyment. When you get a start, you understand what needs to be done, and experience kicks in. I have never been a believer in preparation; all my cricket has been mental. As long as my physical fitness is up and my mental sharpness is intact, I feel fine. I took a day off before the game. At 37, recovery time is essential. After playing over 300 games, you know your reflexes and physical abilities are there. It’s about being fit, mentally prepared, and excited to play well," he stated.
In the match, South Africa opted to bowl first. Although Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed early for 18 runs off 16 balls, Rohit Sharma contributed significantly with 57 runs off 51 balls, forming a 136-run partnership with Kohli. However, India faced a middle-order collapse, losing Rohit, Ruturaj Gaikwad (8), and Washington Sundar (13) quickly, leaving them at 200/4.
A crucial partnership of 76 runs between KL Rahul (60 off 56 balls) and Kohli, followed by a 65-run collaboration with Ravindra Jadeja (32 off 20 balls), helped India reach a total of 349/8 in their 50 overs.
During South Africa's chase, they quickly fell to 11/3 due to the Indian pacers' early strikes. A 66-run partnership between Tony de Zorzi (39 off 37 balls) and Matthew Breetzke provided some stability, while Dewald Brevis added a quick 37 runs. However, South Africa lost half their side for just 130 runs.
A significant 97-run partnership between Breetzke (72 off 80 balls) and Marco Jansen (80 off 39 balls) threatened to turn the game, but Kuldeep Yadav's timely wickets reduced South Africa to 227/8. Corbin Bosch (67 off 51 balls) kept the chase alive, but ultimately, South Africa fell short by 17 runs. Harshit Rana also performed well with the ball, taking 3 wickets for 65 runs.
With this victory, India leads the series 1-0.
