Virat Kohli Reflects on His Cricket Journey and Future Aspirations
Kohli's Commitment to Cricket and Future Goals
Virat Kohli remains passionate about cricket and is focused on participating in next year's World Cup. However, he has expressed that if his value is consistently questioned in a particular environment, he would consider that space unsuitable for him.
During a podcast with his IPL team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the 37-year-old cricket icon voiced his frustration over the frequent changes in how his worth is assessed.
Kohli stated, "I am always prepared because that’s my daily routine. I maintain a healthy lifestyle, not just for cricket but because I enjoy it. Regarding the 2027 World Cup discussions, I’ve been asked repeatedly if I want to play in it."
He continued, "I know my answer. Why would I leave my home and belongings without clarity? If I’m playing, I want to continue. Competing in a World Cup for India is incredible, but my value must be recognized from both sides."
Kohli emphasized, "If I can contribute positively to my environment and it acknowledges my value, I will be recognized. However, if I feel pressured to prove my worth, then that place isn’t right for me."
Currently, Kohli is focused solely on One Day Internationals after stepping back from T20 Internationals in 2024 and Tests in 2025. With a reduced ODI schedule, his appearances for India have become less frequent.
He is expected to participate in the upcoming three-match series against England from July 14 to July 19. Despite his eagerness to be part of the team, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has been vague about the future for both Kohli and fellow ODI star Rohit Sharma.
Kohli mentioned he will remain available as long as he is wanted in the team.
He added, "I am committed to my preparations and approach to the game. I work diligently and play with the right mindset, putting in the effort just like anyone else."
Kohli shared insights into his game strategy, stating he is always ready for the physical demands, including fielding for the entire 50 overs.
He remarked, "I prepare for that. If I need to prove my worth after all this preparation, then that place isn’t for me."
Reflecting on his return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy after two decades in the 2025-26 season, Kohli played two matches for Delhi, scoring a century in one and becoming the fastest player to reach 16,000 List A runs.
He clarified, "I was determined not to prove anything to anyone. I play because I love the game, and that’s how I approached the Vijay Hazare. It was an incredible experience."
Kohli expressed, "Initially, I wondered if I still had the motivation, but once my focus shifted to playing for the love of the game, I felt rejuvenated. It became about me and my passion for cricket."
Regarded as one of the greatest ODI batsmen, Kohli has accumulated 14,797 runs in 311 matches, boasting an impressive average of 58.71, with 54 centuries and 77 fifties, earning him the title of 'chase master' for his performance under pressure.
Finding Joy in Simplicity
Kohli stated that he finds joy in playing cricket but not in an environment where his selection is questioned.
He explained, "If I sense that people are complicating things for me, I prefer clarity. If you believe in my abilities, be straightforward. If doubts arise, it’s confusing."
Kohli concluded, "If you tell me from the start that I’m not good enough, that’s fine. But if you’ve affirmed my capabilities, then let me play without second-guessing. Consistency is key, and fluctuating opinions based on results create instability."
