Virat Kohli Names Chris Gayle as Top T20 Opener Over Rohit Sharma
Kohli's Choice for Best T20 Opener
In a recent discussion with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Virat Kohli expressed his preference for Chris Gayle as the greatest T20 opener, overlooking Rohit Sharma. Kohli highlighted Virender Sehwag as a top choice among several renowned batsmen, including Sachin Tendulkar, but ultimately placed Gayle at the forefront. Even when prompted to choose between Gayle and Rohit, Kohli remained steadfast in his decision.
Chris Gayle, a T20 cricket icon, has amassed an impressive 14,562 runs across 462 matches, boasting a strike rate of 144.75. He is credited with transforming the T20 format, known for his ability to hit massive sixes. With 22 centuries and a record 1,056 sixes, Gayle stands out as the only player to surpass 1,000 sixes in T20 cricket, as well as being the sole batter with over 15 centuries in this format.
During his seven-year tenure at RCB, Gayle and Kohli formed several memorable partnerships, with Gayle contributing 3,163 runs in 85 matches at a strike rate of 152.72. In contrast, Rohit Sharma has scored 12,248 runs in 463 T20 matches, with a strike rate of 135.21, including 8 centuries and 82 fifties, while clearing the ropes 547 times.
Rohit has significantly influenced India's batting strategy since the 2022 T20 World Cup, adopting a more aggressive approach that has inspired his teammates. Currently, he remains active in T20 cricket and is set to play for Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2026. Both he and Kohli concluded their T20I careers after clinching the 2024 World Cup and are now focusing on ODIs.
