Kohli's Aspirations for the 2027 World Cup

Renowned Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has expressed his desire to participate in the 2027 World Cup scheduled to take place in South Africa, contingent on favorable circumstances. Currently, Kohli is focused solely on One Day Internationals (ODIs) and the Indian Premier League (IPL), having stepped back from T20Is and Test matches. This decision has sparked discussions regarding his future in cricket, particularly concerning his involvement in the upcoming ODI World Cup. However, Kohli has addressed these concerns by showcasing his skills, having scored impressively in ODIs last year after a six-month break, achieving three centuries and three fifties in just seven matches. At this stage of his career, Kohli emphasizes that his participation is driven by his passion for the sport.

Throughout his remarkable journey, he has secured two ICC Champions Trophies, a 50-over World Cup, a T20 World Cup, and the IPL title with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). With over a year remaining until the World Cup, Kohli intends to assess various factors, particularly the current dynamics of the game, and mentioned that he would not want to be in a position where he feels compelled to constantly validate his place.

Kohli's Thoughts on Competing in the 2027 World Cup

Despite not participating in the two major formats, Kohli continues to perform at a high level, recently scoring a century against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL. He stated, “Regarding the discussions about the 2027 World Cup, we are still in the middle of 2026. I have been asked repeatedly if I wish to play in 2027. Why would I relocate and not want to play? If I am on the field, I want to represent India and be part of a World Cup. However, the value I bring must be clear. My view is that if I can contribute positively to the environment I am in, and if that environment acknowledges my contribution, then I will be involved,” Kohli shared during a recent podcast with RCB. “But if I feel pressured to continuously prove my worth, then I am not in that mindset. I am committed to my preparation and approach to the game. I work diligently and am grateful to God for the blessings in my cricketing career and the opportunities I have received,” he concluded.
