Vinod Kambli's Health Struggles: A Look at His Journey and Support from Cricket Legends
Vinod Kambli's Health Challenges
In the 1990s, Vinod Kambli emerged as a promising talent in Indian cricket, often compared to his childhood friend, Sachin Tendulkar. However, after a brief but impactful career, which included 104 ODIs and 17 Tests, Kambli's performance declined, leading to his exit from the cricket scene. Recently, he faced severe health issues, including cramping and a bladder infection, which necessitated hospitalization at Akruti Hospital in Thane in December 2024. His deteriorating condition drew attention, prompting many to offer financial support.
Despite some improvement, Kambli's health remains fragile, with reports indicating he has a brain clot. A public appearance at the Ramakant Achrekar memorial in Mumbai raised alarms about his condition, as he appeared unsteady and required assistance from Tendulkar. The cricket community rallied around him, with legends like Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar stepping in to aid his recovery.
Marcus Couto, a close friend of Kambli, shared insights into his condition, revealing that while Kambli's memory is not as sharp, it hasn't significantly worsened. He is facing a serious risk of a brain stroke, as advised by renowned neurosurgeon Adil Chagla. Although Kambli has quit drinking, he sometimes seeks cigarettes from passersby, unaware of the potential harm to his health.
Recently, Kambli participated in a commercial for an ice cream brand, showcasing his resilience. A video of him meeting Tendulkar at the Achrekar memorial went viral, highlighting the support from former players. Kapil Dev even offered to facilitate Kambli's rehabilitation, but funding issues arose, complicating his path to recovery. Couto emphasized the need for comprehensive medical care should Kambli's condition worsen.
