WFI's Stance on Vinesh Phogat's Participation

Ramesh Kumar, the president of the Haryana Wrestling Association, has accused Vinesh Phogat of consistently breaching participation rules, labeling her as obstinate for intentionally disregarding the regulations set by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). He emphasized that Vinesh failed to communicate with either the WFI or the Haryana Wrestling Association regarding her professional journey.

In an interview with a local media outlet following a ruling from the Delhi High Court, Kumar expressed that while they respect the court's decision, Vinesh's lack of discipline and rule infractions were the reasons behind her disqualification from a recent ranking event in Gonda.

Kumar mentioned discussions with WFI president Sanjay Singh, who confirmed that Vinesh's disqualification was in accordance with established rules. He stressed that fairness in sports is paramount and that Vinesh should have complied with WFI regulations to continue her competitive career. He noted that if she aimed for a return, she should have informed the federation and participated in zonal, state, and national competitions instead of seeking a direct entry into the nationals.

When asked about the court's critical remarks regarding WFI's position on Vinesh, Kumar reiterated their acceptance of the ruling but reiterated that Vinesh's actions during the Paris Olympics cost India a potential medal. He pointed out that in many countries, players who make such mistakes face bans, whereas India remains lenient with its athletes.

Mahavir Phogat, Vinesh's uncle and a Dronacharya award-winning coach, expressed optimism for her swift return, stating, "She is engaged in a legal battle but remains in excellent shape for wrestling. She is a significant athlete, and India has high expectations for her."

Wrestling historian Tejpal Dalal remarked that WFI's approach towards Vinesh suggests a rigid stance against her return. He stated, "Vinesh is a celebrated athlete for India, and the federation's attitude towards its players indicates underlying issues within the organization," adding that she is dedicated and passionate about her sport and country.

Importantly, the Delhi High Court, in its ruling on Friday, noted that WFI's shift from its previous practice of allowing participation for esteemed athletes is significant. The court instructed the government to ensure Vinesh's inclusion in the upcoming Asian Games selection trials as she seeks to return after a maternity break. Additionally, it mandated the formation of an expert panel to assess her situation.
