Vinesh Phogat's Emotional Comeback at Asian Games Trials Amid Tensions
Vinesh Phogat Returns to the Mat
The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as Vinesh Phogat made her much-anticipated return to competitive wrestling on Saturday, following the disappointment of her disqualification at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Asian Games selection trials marked her first appearance since that pivotal moment.
As Vinesh stepped onto the mat, the tension escalated, with her supporters and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) officials nearly clashing. Each point she scored was met with enthusiastic cheers from her fans, while any unfavorable calls sparked protests.
The intensity peaked during her quarterfinal match in the 53kg category against the formidable Nishu Kumari. At one point, Vinesh's camp believed she had achieved a pinfall victory, prompting her husband, Sombir Rathee, to rush onto the mat in a heated discussion with the referee, showcasing the emotional stakes of her comeback.
Even a water bottle found its way onto the mat amidst the chaos.
When Vinesh's victory was finally confirmed, her supporters erupted in celebration, dancing and cheering in front of WFI officials, which led to WFI president Sanjay Singh stepping in to restore order. Police were called in to manage the situation.
Security had been heightened outside the venue since early morning, reflecting the sensitivity surrounding Vinesh's return after her lengthy legal and administrative struggles with the federation. Additionally, her position as a sitting MLA from Haryana necessitated further security measures.
The trials unfolded under unique circumstances, as the Supreme Court had granted Vinesh permission to compete, ending months of uncertainty regarding her return.
For many spectators, the unfolding drama surrounding Vinesh overshadowed the competition itself. Every action she took drew attention, with fans cheering her on and officials remaining vigilant in the charged environment.
After 16 months since her most challenging moment in Paris, Vinesh's return transformed the Asian Games trials into a significant event beyond mere selection.
Following her semifinal loss to Meenakshi Goyat, Vinesh declared, "I will come back," a statement that WFI President Sanjay Singh interpreted as directed at him.
"She used very harsh language towards me. I can't disclose the exact words, but she said, 'I will see you, and I will return.' WFI had issued her a show-cause notice for indiscipline, and she continues to exhibit such behavior," Singh stated.
"We had also advised coaches to limit the number of supporters to maintain control, yet Vinesh's large following was evident. The potential for confrontation was palpable, and had WFI officials not exercised restraint, the situation could have escalated further.
"Vinesh's husband Sombir also directed abusive remarks at WFI secretary general (acting) Jai Prakash ji, which is unacceptable."
