Vinesh Phogat's Anticipated Return to Wrestling

Vinesh Phogat is poised to make her comeback on Saturday at the Indira Gandhi Stadium during the Asian Games trials, following a recent legal victory. However, details regarding the weight category she will compete in remain undisclosed by both her team and the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

Previously, Vinesh participated in the 50kg weight class but hinted at a shift to the 57kg division during the National Ranking Series. There is growing speculation that she might actually enter the 53kg category, where Antim Panghal frequently competes.

Officials from the WFI have stated that they have yet to receive any updates from Vinesh about her chosen weight class for the upcoming trials.

Regardless of her decision, this return is proving to be a significant test for the wrestler, especially given the ongoing tensions with the federation since she announced her comeback last December.

Sources close to Vinesh revealed to a local media outlet that they are ready for a potential legal confrontation with the WFI. Her supporters assert that she is in excellent condition after five months of rigorous training in Bengaluru under the guidance of a foreign coach.

According to one of her aides, "She has trained alongside both male and female wrestlers as sparring partners. Vinesh consistently pushes her limits during preparation."

However, wrestling historian Tejpal Dalal expressed concerns about the WFI's attempts to hinder her return. He remarked, "It seemed like a power struggle between Vinesh and the WFI leading up to the trials. The federation's efforts to obstruct her participation after she returned from Bengaluru could have been disheartening for her."

Dalal praised Vinesh and her team for their resilience in taking the issue to the High Court, which not only criticized the WFI but also mandated her participation in the trials. The recent court ruling has further bolstered her confidence as she approaches this high-stakes competition.
