Excitement Builds for the Hockey India League

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], January 3: The Hockey India League (HIL) is set to kick off, with the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers ready to face the Ranchi Royals in their first match on January 4 at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium in Chennai.

Entering the new season, the Lancers have undergone a rigorous pre-season training camp, focusing on team dynamics, strategy, and match preparedness. Meanwhile, the Ranchi Royals are making their debut in the league, boasting a strong lineup retained from the former Gonasika franchise.

In a pre-match statement, head coach Jay Stacy emphasized the significance of preparation and maintaining composure during the initial game. He stated, “The team has dedicated significant effort to prepare, concentrating on clarity in roles and discipline on the field. The opening matches require quick adaptation and intelligent gameplay.”

Stacy acknowledged the challenge posed by the Ranchi Royals, noting their solid core and talented players. He mentioned, “Our Indian players trained early under Technical and Strategy Coach Pascal Kina, followed by the Australians and Belgians joining after Christmas. The training sessions in Bhubaneswar were fruitful and helped us bond as a team.”

Having finished last season as the second-highest goal-scoring team, the Lancers aim to maintain their attacking style while enhancing their defensive capabilities this year.

Co-captain Arthur Van Doren expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming season, stating, “We are thrilled to start a new season and are committed to giving our best. Our attacking mindset from last season is something we wish to carry forward, while also focusing on reducing goals conceded. We have a strong defense, skilled forwards, and a balanced mix of experienced players and newcomers.”

Co-captain Sanjay echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of consistency and a step-by-step approach throughout the season. “There’s a palpable excitement within the team for the new season. We have trained well, and our focus is on taking it match by match, striving to perform at our best every time we step onto the field,” he added.

The Vedanta Kalinga Lancers will play two matches in Chennai, with their second game against the defending champions, Shrachi Bengal Tigers, scheduled for January 8.
