Support for Deepti Sharma's Leadership

In New Delhi, former Indian cricketer Veda Krishnamurthy has expressed her support for Deepti Sharma to assume the captaincy of the UP Warriorz for the upcoming TATA WPL 2027 season. Veda suggests that the franchise should prioritize an Indian player for this crucial role, given Deepti's four-year tenure with the team, indicating she is well-prepared to lead, especially with guidance from former Australia captain Meg Lanning.

During a discussion on JioStar's 'Match Centre Live Auction Special', Veda emphasized that appointing an Indian captain could enhance the team's flexibility in selecting overseas players.

Entering the WPL 2027 Auction with the largest budget, UP Warriorz bolstered their roster by acquiring players like Sophie Molineux, Grace Harris, Sneh Rana, Sushma Verma, and Kathryn Bryce.

On the same JioStar program, experts including Abhinav Mukund, Veda Krishnamurthy, and Anjum Chopra deliberated on the franchise's captaincy choices, overseas player combinations, and significant signings.

Veda articulated that having an Indian captain would allow UP Warriorz to create a more balanced team without the constraints of accommodating an overseas captain.

"I strongly advocate for an Indian player to lead. This approach resolves many issues regarding the overseas player mix. With Deepti Sharma's experience over the past four years, I genuinely believe it's time for UP Warriorz to consider her as captain," she stated, according to a press release from JioStar.

"Meg Lanning can still provide support without being the captain. This arrangement could simplify decisions about the best players for the playing XI. If Meg Lanning is not available, it eases the situation significantly. An overseas captain often requires a spot in the XI, which can disrupt team dynamics if they are out of form," Veda added.

Abhinav Mukund noted that UP Warriorz made a smart move by signing Grace Harris at her base price.

"I feel for Grace Harris; other teams have solidified their overseas player slots. Despite her impressive performance, she finds herself out of a championship-winning team due to the return of a stronger player, Ellyse Perry. It's unfortunate that she went for her base price, which doesn't reflect her true value. If another team had sufficient funds, even Molineux would have fetched a higher price. Grace Harris is a fantastic addition, and she will likely return to the middle order for UP Warriorz," Abhinav remarked.

Anjum Chopra pointed out the selection dilemmas facing UP Warriorz after acquiring Sophie Molineux and Grace Harris. With Phoebe Litchfield, Meg Lanning, and Sophie Ecclestone also in the squad, the team must make critical decisions regarding their four overseas players.

"With Phoebe Litchfield and Meg Lanning in the mix, Sophie Ecclestone is a guaranteed pick. The challenge lies in fitting everyone into the lineup, especially since they want to include Deandra Dottin. Previously, they struggled to find the right balance. Now, with the addition of Sophie Molineux and Grace Harris, who has played for UP Warriorz before, they must figure out how to integrate both Sophie Ecclestone and Sophie Molineux. Unlike Mumbai Indians, who maintain a consistent core, UP Warriorz seem uncertain about their optimal combination. It would be quite unusual if Meg Lanning were to lead the team without Sophie Molineux in the playing XI," Anjum explained.

Regarding Sneh Rana's acquisition, who will be representing her fourth franchise in five WPL seasons, Anjum emphasized her experience and potential impact.

"Sneh Rana has gained significant experience. UP Warriorz recognized the need for a seasoned bowler to support Sophie Ecclestone. While she may not be the marquee player, she can make a substantial difference. Even last season with Delhi Capitals and previously with RCB, she performed her role effectively. I believe she still has plenty of international cricket left in her, and her value is undeniable. Sometimes, players are unfairly labeled as unsuitable for T20 cricket, but Sneh Rana consistently delivers," Anjum concluded.
