Varun Chakravarthy's Insights Ahead of T20I Series
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], December 19: As India gears up for its fifth and final T20I against South Africa, spinner Varun Chakravarthy shared his thoughts on the preparations for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. He emphasized the significance of self-imposed pressure and mental challenges in readiness for the prestigious event.
India finds itself in Group A, competing against Namibia, the Netherlands, Pakistan, and the United States, with their campaign kicking off against the USA on February 7 in Mumbai.
During an interview on 'Follow The Blues', Varun discussed his strategy for the tournament, stating, “It's crucial to consistently challenge yourself to prepare for the World Cup. Even in seemingly easy matches, you must create mental pressure and push your limits. Key factors include confidence, bowling at the right lengths, and understanding the opposition. This understanding is something I aim to leverage in the World Cup.”
He also credited his recent international success to adhering to the fundamentals and maintaining his bowling length. “It has worked well for me in the last three matches, and I plan to continue this approach. Mindset and skill are intertwined; a lack of confidence can hinder your performance. Staying confident and trusting your skills is essential for effective execution, which is the secret to consistency. Competing at the highest level helps you gauge your abilities. I faced challenges in my first international match, which taught me valuable lessons. Returning to practice and making adjustments is vital,” he added.
This year, Varun has been a formidable player for India in T20Is, claiming 32 wickets in 19 matches with an impressive average of 13.18, including best figures of 5/24 and a remarkable economy rate of 6.69. Currently ranked as the number one bowler in the ICC Men’s T20I rankings, he is a crucial asset for India, having taken 51 wickets in 32 matches at an average of 15.00 and an economy rate of 6.74, along with two five-wicket hauls.
In the ongoing series, Varun leads the wicket-takers with six wickets in three matches, averaging 9.83 and boasting an economy rate of 5.36, with best figures of 2/11.
