Varun Chakaravarthy Key to KKR's Success in Upcoming IPL Season
Chakaravarthy's Role in IPL
Despite a disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup, Indian spinner Varun Chakaravarthy is expected to play a vital role for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL, which kicks off on March 28, according to former South African captain Faf du Plessis.
Du Plessis, who has played for teams like Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Royal Challengers Bangalore, shared his insights on ‘JioHotStar’, emphasizing that the pitch at Eden Gardens should be conducive to spin bowlers like Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine.
He stated, 'If I were involved with KKR's management, I would request the groundsman to prepare a spin-friendly wicket. KKR is fortunate to have two exceptional spinners in Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine.'
Du Plessis highlighted the importance of both players, saying, 'They are among the top T20 spinners currently. For KKR to thrive this IPL, both Varun and Narine must perform well. The pitch should be tailored to suit their strengths.'
Chakaravarthy's performance in the T20 World Cup was not up to par, as he took 14 wickets but had a high economy rate exceeding 9.
Last season, KKR struggled, finishing near the bottom of the points table with only five wins out of 14 matches. They will begin their new campaign against the Mumbai Indians on March 29.
Du Plessis also mentioned Cameron Green as another key player for KKR, although he noted the pressure that comes with Green's hefty Rs 25.2 crore contract.
'Cameron Green is a talented player with immense potential. He is a marquee signing for KKR, stepping in as a replacement for Andre Russell,' he remarked.
'Standing six feet tall, Green is a formidable player who can bowl effectively and hit the ball powerfully. He is a complete package that adds balance to KKR's lineup.'
However, Du Plessis cautioned that Green has not been in great form lately and will face significant pressure due to his price tag.
Former Indian cricketer Lakshmipathy Balaji advised KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane to bat higher up the order.
'I believe Rahane should bat in the top order, ideally no lower than number three. He has excelled at that position with CSK and scored plenty of runs,' Balaji suggested.
'Having him bat at number three would benefit both him and KKR. Cameron Green could then come in at number four, allowing him time to settle before attacking the bowlers. A top four of Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, Ajinkya Rahane, and Cameron Green would be ideal,' he concluded.
