Vani Kapoor Leads at Women's Indian Open, Eyes Historic Victory
Vani Kapoor's Historic Pursuit
Gurugram (Haryana) [India], October 24: Golf is a game that demands patience, and Vani Kapoor has demonstrated remarkable perseverance as she aims for a significant achievement at the $500,000 Women's Indian Open (HWIO).
Currently leading after 54 holes at the DLF Golf and Country Club, Vani is poised for a pivotal moment on the Ladies European Tour (LET) this Sunday, a testament to her years of dedication.
Golf can be unpredictable, with fortunes changing over just 18 holes. For now, Vani is embracing the pressure of potentially becoming the first Indian to win the national open since Aditi Ashok's victory in 2016.
With a narrow lead at 5-under 211 (73, 69, 69), Vani is closely followed by defending champion Shannon Tan from Singapore at 4-under 212 (68, 77, 67) and Thailand's Pornanong Phatlum, a three-time HWIO winner (72, 71, 69), as reported by the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI).
Vani expressed gratitude for the support of her family and friends, who keep her grounded. She remarked, “They remind me that there are still 18 holes to play and work to be done, which helps me stay focused,” as she strives to achieve a milestone she has yet to reach.
Indian Contenders Shine
Saturday proved to be a fruitful day for Indian golfers. Despite battling illness and fatigue, Pranavi Urs, who was tied for second overnight, managed to finish tied for fourth alongside Argentina's Magdalena Simmermacher at the conclusion of Round 3.
Her resilience was commendable, and had fatigue not hindered her performance on the back nine, Pranavi could have maintained an under-par score for the third consecutive day.
“My body is still recovering, and I anticipate another tough day tomorrow,” Pranavi stated, as she prepares for another shot at a title following her historic gold medal win at the Asian Games in Japan.
Another Hero Brand Ambassador, Tvesa Malik, is also in contention, currently sitting in eighth place with a steady round of 1-under for the day, totaling 215.
Reflecting on Past Success
While golf typically discourages dwelling on past performances, Vani took a moment to reflect on her impressive eagle-birdie stretch from Friday. She maintained her momentum, resulting in one of her best rounds on her home course during Saturday's Moving Day.
With her putter working well and emotions in check, Vani feels prepared for the final day. “I’m stable and not overly excited. I’m being cautious, especially with one more day to go,” she noted.
Shannon Tan's Challenge
Shannon Tan, a prominent name on the LET, faced an unusual challenge with a 77 on Friday, but she rebounded with a strong start on Saturday, making five birdies in six holes on the front nine.
Her aggressive play was a sight to behold, but a strained wrist from overuse hindered her performance on the back nine, forcing her to be cautious.
Pornanong's Legacy
Pornanong Phatlum, who has previously won the Women's Indian Open three times, is determined to replicate her past successes at the DLF Golf and Country Club. She emphasized the importance of focus, stating, “I try to concentrate on every shot because this course is very challenging, and I believe I performed well over the last three rounds.”
Encouraging Young Talent
The Women’s Golf Association of India continues to support its junior program by inviting young golfers to participate in the Hero Women’s Indian Open. Recently, 21 girls from the program had the opportunity to play alongside professionals during the 'Beat the Pro' initiative on Hole 5.
The final round of the Hero Women’s Indian Open is set to begin tomorrow at 9 am, with the leading group of Vani Kapoor, Shannon Tan, and Pornanong Phatlum teeing off at 11 am.
