Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Potential Debut Sparks Excitement Ahead of T20I Against Ireland
Anticipation Grows for Sooryavanshi's Debut
Belfast [Ireland], June 25: As the Indian cricket team prepares for their first T20I against Ireland, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak discussed the exciting possibility of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi making his international debut. While Kotak is optimistic about Sooryavanshi's future with the team, he emphasized the importance of not sidelining other in-form players in favor of the young talent from Rajasthan Royals.
The opening match of the two-game series is set to take place in Belfast on Friday, and the spotlight will undoubtedly be on Sooryavanshi. If he takes the field, he will become the youngest Indian cricketer to compete at the international level at just 15 years old.
In a pre-match press conference, Sitanshu remarked, “This is Vaibhav's first experience in a senior team environment. I have observed his performance in the U19 setup, and he is undoubtedly a remarkable talent. His IPL performance speaks volumes.”
He further explained that players involved in U19, India A, or 'Emerging' teams are generally familiar with the culture of Team India. “There isn’t a significant difference for him. What we want is for him to enjoy this experience. If he has questions or wants to share his thoughts, he should feel free to do so. Gautam has also encouraged this approach. He should feel like he’s playing for his own team and express himself. His batting skills, adjustment, and intent are impressive,” he added.
Sitanshu acknowledged that during the IPL, Sooryavanshi faced high-caliber bowlers, including England's Jofra Archer, who he might encounter on the England tour. “He handled it all without any issues,” he noted.
“I am confident he will receive his chances. However, it wouldn’t be fair to drop a player who is currently performing well just to give him an opportunity. The decision ultimately lies with the team management regarding the match strategy,” he explained.
In a recent tri-nation series in Sri Lanka, Sooryavanshi scored 211 runs in five innings, averaging 42.20 with a remarkable strike rate of nearly 201, including a top score of 94. He also set a record for the fastest List A fifty in just 11 balls against Sri Lanka A.
Sooryavanshi earned his first national call-up after an outstanding IPL 2026 season with Rajasthan Royals, where he scored 776 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 237.30, featuring a century and five fifties. His explosive performance made him the tournament's leading run-scorer, with a record 72 sixes.
The young cricketer also received several post-season accolades, including the Orange Cap, Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player, Super Striker, and Super Sixes awards.
Regarding Shreyas Iyer's debut as T20I captain for India, Sitanshu mentioned that Iyer will have experienced senior players in the leadership group to support him.
“Shreyas has significant captaincy experience from the IPL and has led Mumbai. He was also the captain when he won the championship with Gautam in KKR. Expectations for him are realistic,” Sitanshu stated.
“Our focus remains on the team’s success. His message during the huddle today was clear: we will support each other, acknowledging that some players will have good days while others may struggle. We aim to foster a supportive environment,” he concluded.
