Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's International Debut

In Noida, Uttar Pradesh, former Indian cricketer Maninder Singh shared his thoughts on the young talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who made his international debut against England in the second T20I, scoring just 14 runs. Singh suggested that Sooryavanshi, at just 15 years old, should have debuted during the Ireland series, as he displayed signs of nervousness during his first match at the senior level.

Sooryavanshi etched his name in history by becoming the youngest cricketer to represent India at the age of 15 years and 99 days, surpassing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who debuted at 16 years and 238 days in 1989. However, his debut was brief, lasting only 10 balls.

In an interview, Singh expressed his support for the young cricketer, emphasizing that facing the Irish team first could have better prepared him for the formidable English bowling attack. He acknowledged that nerves are a common experience, even for seasoned players, and expressed hope for Sooryavanshi's success in white-ball cricket, which he described as a game for the courageous.

"I am thrilled for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He should have played in Ireland due to his rhythm and form. Experiencing failures there might have eased his nerves for this match. The shot he played was not characteristic of him; it reflected his anxiety. He is just a 15-year-old competing against men, and even top players feel nervous. He has shown his capability by hitting sixes against renowned bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Pat Cummins," Singh remarked.

Maninder urged cricket enthusiasts to be patient with Sooryavanshi, highlighting that batting in challenging overseas conditions is a valuable learning experience for the young star.

"All Indian cricket fans should exercise patience because he is a gifted player. He has the potential to make a significant impact in matches. I am confident that he will meet our expectations as he is a brave player, and white-ball cricket is indeed a game for the brave," he concluded.

Sooryavanshi was included in India's T20I squads for the tours of Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games, making him the youngest player ever selected for the national team, breaking a 36-year-old record held by Sachin Tendulkar.

His selection followed an impressive IPL 2026 season with the Rajasthan Royals, where he scored 776 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 237.30, including a century and five fifties. He emerged as the tournament's leading run-scorer, hitting a record 72 sixes.

The young cricketer also received multiple accolades post-IPL, including the Orange Cap, Most Valuable Player, Emerging Player, Super Striker, and Super Sixes awards.

Throughout his IPL career, Sooryavanshi has accumulated 1,028 runs in 23 matches at an average of 44.69 and a strike rate of 228.95, with two centuries and six fifties, boasting a top score of 103 and 96 sixes.

In a recent tri-nation series in Sri Lanka, he scored 211 runs in five innings at an average of 42.20, with a strike rate nearing 201, and a best score of 94, achieving his only fifty in the final. He also set a record for the fastest List A fifty in just 11 balls against Sri Lanka A.

Sooryavanshi leads India in youth ODIs, amassing 1,412 runs in 25 innings at an average of 56.48 and a strike rate of 165.72, including four centuries and seven fifties, with a top score of 175. His debut in the U19 World Cup this year saw him score 439 runs in seven innings at an average of 62.71 and a strike rate of 169.49, featuring a century and three fifties, along with a record 30 sixes, the highest in the tournament's history.
