Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Potential in Test Cricket

Former Indian captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth believes that the young batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could lead a resurgence in Test cricket if he reaches his full potential. He urged fans and analysts to refrain from over-analyzing the teenager's performances.

Sooryavanshi, who has made a name for himself in the IPL, has received his first call-up to the Indian T20 squad. He is set to participate in a seven-match tour of Ireland and England, starting with two matches against Ireland on June 26 in Belfast.

Srikkanth praised the 15-year-old for his unique ability to captivate audiences and emphasized the importance of allowing him to grow without the weight of high expectations.

"What stands out about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is his eagerness to score and dominate. He can also play patiently," Srikkanth remarked during a recent interview.

He expressed confidence that if Sooryavanshi transitions successfully from T20 to one-day formats and eventually to Test cricket, he could play a pivotal role in revitalizing the format.

"We need players like him today. People tune in just to watch Sooryavanshi. I do too. He has created an incredible aura around himself," Srikkanth added.

He cautioned against excessive scrutiny following Sooryavanshi's underwhelming performance during the recent India A tour of Sri Lanka.

"Vaibhav, ignore the chatter and focus on your game," Srikkanth advised. "You can't judge a player based on one series. Give him time. He was phenomenal in the IPL, winning multiple awards in just his second year, outshining many top players globally."

Srikkanth highlighted Sooryavanshi's exceptional shot-making skills and reflexes, asserting that he is crucial for the future of Indian cricket.

"He requires time and encouragement. He has the potential to win matches on his own. We should provide him with ample opportunities to develop," he stated.

Srikkanth also welcomed Sooryavanshi's inclusion in the senior Indian team setup, suggesting that he should be part of the reserves for the England series to gain valuable experience.

"Even if he doesn't play, being around the team will help him understand international cricket better. He should be given chances to play his natural game against both Ireland and England," he noted.

When asked about comparisons between Sooryavanshi and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, Srikkanth dismissed the notion, stating, "Sachin is the God of cricket, while Vaibhav is the son of God. Let's not compare them."

Srikkanth praised Sooryavanshi's performance in under-19 cricket, noting his remarkable shot-making ability and composure during high-pressure situations.

On the topic of Virat Kohli, Srikkanth expressed that Kohli deserved a grand farewell from Test cricket, given his contributions to the game.

"Kohli is exceptional, with unmatched passion and commitment. He has been one of India's finest Test captains, but unfortunately, he hasn't secured an ICC trophy," he remarked.

Srikkanth felt that Kohli should have played in the Test series against England last year, stating that he deserved a fitting send-off.

Regarding Rohit Sharma, Srikkanth affirmed his belief in Sharma's capabilities, suggesting that if he remains fit and continues to score runs, he should participate in the 2027 World Cup.
