Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Stellar Performance
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi proved his critics wrong by clinching the Player of the Series title in the recent matches against Zimbabwe. After a challenging debut in England, where he faced three consecutive failures leading to his exclusion from the squad, Sooryavanshi took the opportunity to refine his skills at the Rajasthan Royals camp. He returned to the international stage against Zimbabwe and seized the chance, scoring a rapid fifty off just 19 balls in the opening match, followed by a crucial 81 in the final game, which contributed to India's clean sweep of the series. Winning the Player of the Series award was a significant achievement for Sooryavanshi, who expressed his joy, stating, "It felt very good. It is a dream come true for me. First man of the match and man of the series. The preparation here has been good." He acknowledged the support from his teammates, including the coach and captain, and emphasized his focus on maintaining his T20 style while aiming for substantial innings.
"I played the U19 World Cup here (in Harare) as well and I feel good playing here. What I do in practice, I try to replicate that in the matches," he added.
Shreyas Iyer Celebrates First Series Win as Captain
Vaibhav wasn't the only one feeling the pressure; captain Shreyas Iyer also had much to prove after previous losses to Ireland and England. Following the series victory, he expressed relief and praised the team's fearless approach during the matches in Zimbabwe. "As we saw, how fearlessly they are. A young bunch of players showing tremendous energy and intent on the field. To have that kind of energy is what I demand as a captain and we saw that. Special series win. Clinical. 3-0 so it's a special one," Iyer remarked.
He further mentioned, "I try to make sure they are comfortable and relaxed. That's how you can get the best out of them. You see boys taking that responsibility and winning games, you need that." Iyer highlighted the importance of maintaining calmness and courage as they move forward, which he believes will benefit Indian cricket significantly. Looking ahead, India is set to travel to Sri Lanka for a vital two-match Test series in August, followed by a multi-format series against the West Indies at home in October.
