Finals Set for FIDE World Cup 2025

Panaji (Goa) [India], November 23: In an exciting turn of events, GM Javokhir Sindarov from Uzbekistan and GM Wei Yi of China will compete in the finals of the FIDE World Cup 2025. Both players secured their spots in the final after triumphing in their respective semifinals through tiebreaks, as announced by FIDE.

The semifinals concluded with both classical games ending in draws, leading to a test of rapid skills in the tiebreak rounds.

Sindarov, who previously halted GM Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara's impressive run in the quarterfinals, took the lead by defeating Nodirbek Yakubboev in the first rapid game while playing with black pieces. He forced Yakubboev to resign after 47 moves, nearly promoting his c-file pawn to a queen in a rook-pawn endgame. Sindarov then secured a comfortable draw in the second game with white pieces, despite Yakubboev's attempts to secure a win over 54 moves.

In the other semifinal, Wei Yi demonstrated his rapid game prowess by drawing the first game with black pieces and then overcoming GM Andrey Esipenko in 57 moves while playing with white. Wei, the highest-ranked player remaining in the tournament, faced a challenging position after move 55, as Esipenko had a material advantage with two extra pawns in a rook-knight endgame. However, Esipenko missed a crucial opportunity to defend his rook, which could have shifted the game's outcome.

Reflecting on his victory, Wei Yi expressed, “This is the biggest achievement of my chess career. I am thrilled about it. I aimed to give my best today. In the final position of the second game, my opponent made a rook blunder. Otherwise, black could have played for a win, and I would have had to settle for a draw. This tournament is lengthy, and perhaps he was fatigued,” as reported by FIDE.

Now, Sindarov and Wei Yi will clash for the prestigious Viswanathan Anand Cup, while Yakubboev and Esipenko will compete for the third and final Candidates Spots.
