Uruguay's World Cup Squad Announcement

Montevideo [Uruguay], May 31: Uruguay has officially announced its squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, and the exclusion of veteran striker Luis Suarez has raised eyebrows.


The 39-year-old forward, who has been a key player for the national team for over a decade, will not participate in the tournament taking place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This marks the first time since Uruguay's return to the World Cup in South Africa 2010 that Suarez will not be included.


Another notable absence is Nahitan Nandez, who played a significant role during the qualifiers.


From the Brazilian league, players called up include Guillermo Varela, Giorgian de Arrascaeta, and Nicolas de la Cruz from Flamengo, Joaquin Piquerez and Emiliano Martinez from Palmeiras, along with Agustin Canobbio from Fluminense, and Sergio Rochet from Inter.


Uruguay will kick off their 2026 World Cup journey in Group H, facing Saudi Arabia on June 16, followed by matches against Cape Verde on June 22 and a crucial encounter with Spain on June 27.
