Strengthening Sports Infrastructure in Mizoram
Aizawl (Mizoram) [India], September 15: During her recent visit to Aizawl, Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse, assessed the sports landscape in Mizoram. Her focus was on enhancing sports facilities, supporting local athletes, and creating more opportunities for emerging talent from the Northeast, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of fostering a robust sporting culture in India.
Upon her arrival, Khadse was greeted by Pu Lalnghinglova Hmar, the Minister of State for Sports and Youth Services in Mizoram. They engaged in discussions aimed at bolstering the sports ecosystem within the state, emphasizing the need for effective coordination between the central and state governments, improving sports infrastructure, and nurturing local talent.
Khadse later toured the Sports Authority of India (SAI) center in Aizawl, where she evaluated the existing sports facilities and interacted with athletes, coaches, and support staff. Shivam Yadav, Assistant Director at SAI, accompanied her during this visit.
While meeting with the athletes, Khadse listened to their training experiences and aspirations, commending their commitment to achieving excellence in sports. She stressed the necessity of providing quality coaching, scientific support, rehabilitation, nutrition, and competitive exposure to young athletes from the Northeast to help them advance to national and international levels.
SAI plays a crucial role in the Northeast, promoting the development of sports talent and implementing various sports initiatives in the region. Khadse highlighted that institutional support, along with programs under the Khelo India Scheme, is essential for creating pathways for young athletes to transition from grassroots participation to competitive sports.
The government is also focused on enhancing sports infrastructure in Mizoram. The Khelo India initiative aims to establish a synthetic hockey turf and improve lighting at the SAI Training Centre in Aizawl, marking a significant advancement for hockey facilities in the state.
Khadse acknowledged Mizoram's remarkable sporting potential, particularly in football and hockey. The accomplishments of local athletes underscore the importance of nurturing talent through consistent institutional support and creating opportunities in proximity to where young athletes train.
An exemplary figure is Lalremsiami Hmarzote, Mizoram's first female Olympian and Asian Games medallist, who trained at the SAI academy in Thenzawl before reaching the national level. She has also been nominated for the Arjuna Award 2025, making her the first sportsperson from Mizoram to receive this recognition.
Khadse reiterated the government's commitment to establishing a comprehensive athlete development ecosystem, where infrastructure is paired with quality coaching, sports science, rehabilitation, nutrition, and regular competition exposure. She emphasized Khelo India's role in broadening sporting opportunities and nurturing grassroots talent.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision has intensified the focus on cultivating a sporting culture nationwide, identifying grassroots talent, and providing structured pathways for young athletes to excel. Khadse reaffirmed that the Northeast, with its rich sporting heritage and talent, is pivotal to India's sporting future.
She concluded that enhancing facilities near athletes, expanding opportunities for young talent, and ensuring effective collaboration between the Union and State Governments are crucial for enabling more sportspersons from Mizoram and the Northeast to compete on national and international stages.
This visit underscored Raksha Khadse's commitment to enhancing sports opportunities for the youth in the Northeast, alongside the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and SAI's ongoing efforts to create a more accessible and athlete-focused sporting environment in the region.
