Spain's Goalkeeper Leads Golden Glove Race

In Zapopan, Mexico, on June 28, Spain's goalkeeper Unai Simon has impressively maintained clean sheets in all three of his team's group-stage matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026, positioning himself as a frontrunner for the Golden Glove award.

As reported by FotMob, Simon currently tops the clean sheet leaderboard with three shutouts, having not conceded any goals throughout the tournament. He is closely followed by Mexico's Raul Rangel, who has achieved two clean sheets without allowing any goals. Notable goalkeepers such as Brazil's Alisson Becker, Colombia's Camilo Vargas, and Portugal's Diogo Costa have also recorded two clean sheets, conceding only one goal each, showcasing a robust defensive performance from various teams.

Spain's journey in the FIFA World Cup 2026 has seen a significant improvement in their group-stage performance. They secured their place in the Round of 32 with a victory over Uruguay, breaking a long-standing pattern of struggles in the group stage that has persisted since their championship win in 2010.

Uruguay faced elimination from the tournament after Spain's Alex Baena scored a crucial goal just before halftime (42nd minute), ensuring Spain finished at the top of Group H. Spain will now compete against Austria in the Round of 32, scheduled for July 2 in Los Angeles.

With two wins and a draw, Spain topped Group H, accumulating a total of seven points.

According to Opta Analyst, this is the first instance since 2010 that Spain has won two matches in the group stage of a FIFA World Cup, recalling their victories over Honduras and Chile during their title-winning campaign 16 years ago.

Remarkably, Spain has completed a FIFA World Cup group stage without conceding a single goal for the first time in their history. In this edition, they began with a goalless draw against Cape Verde, the tournament debutants, followed by a commanding 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia.

In the 2014 World Cup, Spain was eliminated in the group stage with only one win and two losses. In the subsequent tournaments of 2018 and 2022, they reached the round of 16 but managed to secure just one victory in each.

Spain joins Mexico as the second team in the 2026 FIFA World Cup to finish the group stage without conceding a goal, with Mexico also winning all three of their matches.
