Unai Simon Sets New World Cup Record as Spain Advances to Knockout Stage
Spain's Goalkeeper Makes History
Los Angeles [US], July 3: Unai Simon, the goalkeeper for Spain, has made his mark in FIFA World Cup history by achieving a remarkable feat—setting a new record for the longest duration without conceding a goal. This achievement helped La Roja secure a decisive 3-0 win against Austria, propelling them into the last 16.
As reported by Opta Jose, Simon has now gone 519 minutes in World Cup play without allowing a goal, breaking the previous record of 517 minutes set by Italy's Walter Zenga.
The clean sheet against Austria marked Simon's fourth of the tournament, contributing to Spain's impressive defensive performance, which now stands at 595 minutes across five consecutive World Cup matches without conceding.
Spain has yet to allow a goal in this tournament, showcasing their strength on both offense and defense. This victory also marked their first knockout-stage win since they lifted the trophy in South Africa in 2010.
While Simon's record was a highlight, Spain's attacking prowess was evident as they comfortably secured the win. Mikel Oyarzabal shone with two goals, and Pedro Porro netted his first international goal, as Luis de la Fuente's team dominated an Austrian side that struggled to cope with Spain's relentless attack.
From the beginning, Spain controlled possession, with Lamine Yamal and Aymeric Laporte posing threats. Marc Cucurella had a goal disallowed due to a controversial foul on goalkeeper Alexander Schlager. Austria managed to survive several close calls thanks to Schlager's impressive saves, but the deadlock was broken just before halftime when Cucurella assisted Oyarzabal, who finished calmly to give Spain a well-deserved lead.
After the break, Austria posed a brief threat with substitute Sasa Kalajdzic heading just over the bar, but Spain quickly regained control. Porro extended the lead with a well-placed header from Alex Baena's cross, effectively sealing the match.
Yamal was denied by a goal-line clearance from David Alaba before Oyarzabal completed his brace in the final moments, once again converting a precise pass from Cucurella.
This victory extends Spain's unbeaten streak to 14 matches, sending them into the Round of 16 with high confidence, where they will meet the winner of the Portugal versus Croatia match.
For Austria, this defeat concluded a memorable campaign that saw them reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time since 1954, but Simon's record-breaking performance ensured that the night belonged to Spain's historic goalkeeper.
