UK Pubs to Open Early for England's World Cup Clash Against Mexico
Early Opening for Pubs Ahead of England's Match
On July 2, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that pubs across the United Kingdom will be permitted to open their doors early on Monday, July 6, to broadcast England's Round of 16 match against Mexico in the FIFA World Cup 2026. This initiative aims to rally support for the Three Lions as they compete.
In a message shared on X, Starmer expressed, “We’re ensuring that pubs can remain open early on Monday morning for the England game. I know many are making plans to watch it at the pub, which is fantastic for both fans and pubs alike. Let’s go, England!”
As for England's journey in the 2026 World Cup, they kicked off their campaign with a 4-2 victory over Croatia, followed by a goalless draw against Ghana, and a solid 2-0 win against Panama during the group stage.
In the Round of 32, England faced a challenging match against Congo DR, where they came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory, thanks to two goals from captain Harry Kane.
Congo DR surprised England with an early goal from Brian Cipenga in the 7th minute and maintained their lead through disciplined defense and effective counter-attacks, frustrating the English side despite their possession dominance.
However, England turned the tide late in the second half with tactical adjustments, as Kane equalized in the 75th minute and scored again in the 86th minute, sealing the comeback.
On the other side, Mexico began their group stage with a 2-0 win over South Africa, followed by a 1-0 victory against South Korea, and capped off with a 3-0 triumph over Czechia.
In their Round of 32 match against Ecuador, Mexico won 2-0, marking their first knockout-stage victory in the FIFA World Cup since 1986, ending an eight-match elimination streak in knockout rounds, the longest in World Cup history, as noted by OptaJoe.
Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez scored in the first half, establishing a solid lead, while their defense held strong to maintain a clean sheet.
Despite Ecuador's possession dominance in the second half, they couldn't find the net, and their hopes were dashed further when Piero Hincapie received a red card in stoppage time. This victory marked Mexico's fourth consecutive win in the tournament and highlighted their impressive form on home soil.
Both teams are set to clash in the Round of 16 on July 5.
