Trump's Intervention Clears Balogun for World Cup Knockout Stage
Trump Steps In for Balogun's Suspension
On July 6, in Washington, DC, it was reported that President Donald Trump took direct action regarding Folarin Balogun's suspension from the FIFA World Cup 2026. He reached out to FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a reconsideration of the striker's automatic ban, according to sources.
Following Balogun's red card during the United States' Round of 32 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Trump’s intervention led FIFA to reassess the situation. The governing body ultimately allowed the 25-year-old forward to participate in the upcoming Round of 16 match against Belgium.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee announced on Sunday that the automatic suspension for Balogun would be put on hold for a probationary period of one year, as stated in Article 27 of the FDC.
Balogun had been pivotal in the tournament, contributing three goals before receiving a red card in the 64th minute of the USA's 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
After FIFA's ruling, Trump expressed his gratitude on Truth Social, stating, 'Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice! President Donald J. Trump.'
However, the decision has faced criticism. Belgium's football federation has voiced strong objections to FIFA's ruling and is exploring all possible avenues following Balogun's eligibility for the knockout stage.
Balogun's availability is a significant advantage for head coach Mauricio Pochettino as the United States aims to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2002.
The USA's last encounter with Belgium in the World Cup was in 2014, where they faced a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat in extra time, despite an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Tim Howard.
With Balogun now cleared to play, the United States is gearing up for a crucial match in Seattle, hoping to break a 24-year drought for a spot in the World Cup's final eight, while discussions about FIFA's handling of his suspension continue to stir controversy.
