A Heartfelt Farewell to Jaspal Rana

Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], June 12: Rajendra Singh Rana, the uncle of the late Jaspal Rana, a celebrated Indian shooter and coach, expressed profound grief over his unexpected passing. He noted that Jaspal had no known health issues and was en route to Germany when tragedy struck.


Jaspal, who passed away in New Delhi on Friday after facing health challenges, was remembered by his uncle, Rajendra Singh Rana, who stated, “This is a moment of great sorrow. He had no prior health issues. He was heading to Germany when this happened.”


As one of India's most accomplished shooters, Rana leaves behind an impressive legacy that spans over three decades. He is recognized as India's most successful athlete in the Commonwealth Games, having amassed an incredible 15 medals—nine gold, four silver, and two bronze—across the 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2006 editions.


His accolades went beyond the Commonwealth Games, as he secured four gold medals and one silver at the Asian Games, including a gold at the 1994 Hiroshima Asian Games and a remarkable three gold medals at the 2006 Doha Asian Games.


During the 1994 World Shooting Championships in Milan, he achieved gold while setting a record score. Additionally, he equaled the world record in the 25m Centre Fire Pistol event with a total score of 590 at the 2006 Asian Games.


At the time of his passing, Rana was serving as India's high-performance coach for pistol shooting. His influence as both a champion and a mentor has left a lasting impact on Indian sports.


Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his condolences on Friday, describing the loss of Jaspal Rana as an “irreparable loss to the nation.” He stated, “Deeply saddened by the demise of legendary sportsperson Jaspal Rana Ji. He dedicated his life to establishing India’s indomitable mettle in shooting by winning international honors for the nation and nurturing young shooters as a coach. At this moment of grief, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family and millions of admirers.”


Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also shared his sorrow over Rana's passing, saying, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Jaspal Rana Ji. His passing is a profound loss to the world of Indian sports. He brought immense glory to the nation through his extraordinary achievements in shooting. His unwavering commitment to excellence and service to the sporting world earned him immense admiration. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and the entire sporting fraternity in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”
