A Heartfelt Farewell to Franco Baresi

Milan [Italy], July 31: FC Barcelona has conveyed its heartfelt condolences following the passing of the iconic Italian football defender, Franco Baresi.

In a message shared on X, the club stated, “FC Barcelona extends its deepest sympathies for the loss of Franco Baresi, a true legend of Italian football and the eternal captain of AC Milan. His remarkable leadership, grace, and lasting impact on the sport will forever be cherished by fans and all who appreciate football. Rest in peace, Franco.”

Franco Baresi, who captained AC Milan during the 1980s and 1990s, led the team to three European Cups and six Serie A titles before his passing at the age of 66.

AC Milan confirmed Baresi's death on their official X account. He dedicated his entire professional career, from 1977 to 1997, to AC Milan, becoming one of the club's most revered figures. He also celebrated victory as a FIFA World Cup champion with Italy.

AC Milan expressed their sorrow on X, stating, “The entire AC Milan family is mourning the loss of Franco Baresi. His legacy and integrity will forever be part of the Club’s identity, just as his legendary number 6 shirt will be. Our condolences go out to Franco Baresi’s family during this challenging time, shared by every Rossonero who feels this loss deeply.”

Inter Milan, AC Milan's fierce rival, also paid tribute to Baresi, recognizing him as a pivotal figure in the rivalry between the two clubs, who exemplified both competitiveness and respect.

“Farewell to Franco Baresi, our adversary in numerous Derbies and a key figure in this historic rivalry. As AC Milan’s captain, he always embodied the spirit of competition and respect in one of Italian football's most significant fixtures. Chairman Giuseppe Marotta and all of FC Internazionale Milano extend their deepest condolences to the Baresi family, especially to his brother Beppe, and to AC Milan during this sorrowful time,” Inter Milan posted.

Baresi's illustrious career includes six Serie A titles with AC Milan, three UEFA Champions League titles, four Supercoppa Italiana trophies, two Intercontinental Cups, and two European Super Cup titles. He was also part of the Italian national team that won the FIFA World Cup in 1982 and finished as runners-up in 1994.

In 1989, he was a runner-up for the prestigious Ballon d'Or, the highest individual accolade in football.
