Tributes Pour In for Former Indian Football Star Mohan Singh
Mohan Singh: A Legacy Remembered
New Delhi [India] - The All India Football Federation (AIFF) expressed its sorrow over the passing of Mohan Singh, a former Indian midfielder, who died on Thursday, May 7, 2026.
Recognized as a talented midfielder of his era, Mohan Singh represented India internationally during the early 1970s.
He made his debut for the senior national team on March 22, 1972, against Burma in Rangoon during the Pre-Olympic Tournament. Throughout the 1972 Pre-Olympic campaign, he earned three caps for the national side, as noted in an AIFF press release.
AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey remarked, “Mohan Singh was an exceptional midfielder who dedicated himself to Indian football. His contributions to the national team and several of the country’s most prestigious clubs showcased his dedication and love for the game. On behalf of the Indian football community, I extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.”
On the domestic front, Mohan Singh played for Bengal in the Santosh Trophy in 1972, where he significantly contributed by scoring two goals, helping the team secure the title.
At the club level, he had notable stints with East Bengal and Mohun Bagan.
While with East Bengal from 1972 to 1975, he netted 11 goals in various competitions, including the Calcutta Football League, IFA Shield, Bordoloi Trophy, Durand Cup, and Rovers Cup. His time with the Red and Gold brigade saw him win multiple titles: the Calcutta Football League (1972, 1975), IFA Shield (1972, 1975), Durand Cup (1972), Rovers Cup (1972, 1975), and Bordoloi Trophy (1972).
He later joined Mohun Bagan in 1973 and 1974, scoring three goals and winning the Durand Cup in 1974. In 1976, he also played for Mohammedan Sporting Club, further solidifying his impressive career in Indian club football.
