New Delhi, June 12: The Indian shooting community mourns the loss of Jaspal Rana, a celebrated coach and former Asian Games gold medalist, who passed away at the age of 49.

Rana was instrumental in coaching several prominent Indian pistol shooters, including the double Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker, and held the position of high-performance coach for the Indian pistol shooting team.

He was hospitalized after experiencing discomfort while returning to India from the ISSF World Cup held in Munich.

Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo, President of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), expressed his condolences, stating, “This is a significant loss. He was not just a champion shooter but also an exceptional mentor. His absence will be profoundly felt.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Rana amassed an impressive collection of medals, becoming India's most decorated athlete in Commonwealth Games history with a total of 15 medals—9 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze—across four editions: 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2006. He also secured eight medals in the Asian Games during the 1994, 1998, and 2006 events.

In recognition of his contributions to Indian shooting, he received the Arjuna Award in 1994 and the Padma Shri in 1997. His coaching excellence was acknowledged with the Dronacharya Award in 2020, the highest accolade for sports coaching in India.

Transitioning from a successful shooting career to coaching, Rana played a pivotal role in nurturing the next generation of pistol shooters in India.

His most notable achievement was coaching Manu Bhaker, who made headlines by winning two bronze medals at the Paris Olympics. Rana also mentored other elite shooters, including Saurabh Chaudhary, Anish Bhanwala, and Chinki Yadav, contributing significantly to the future of Indian shooting.
